AQA or OCR? Why the Specification Matters More Than the Board

Students often ask which exam board is easier. That is the wrong question. Here is what actually differs between specifications, and when it matters.

No board is easier

Grade boundaries are set after each series, based on how that cohort performed on that paper. A paper that turns out to be harder attracts lower boundaries. This is the mechanism that makes grades comparable across boards, and it is why the search for an easy board is a waste of energy. What does differ is content, structure and style. Two A-Levels in the same subject from different boards can cover meaningfully different material, assess it in different formats, and reward different habits. That is worth understanding — not to find an advantage, but to avoid preparing for the wrong paper.

Where the differences actually bite

The most common difference is content coverage. Optional topics vary, and so does the depth expected in shared ones. A student who moves institution mid-course, or who revises from materials aimed at a different specification, can spend weeks learning material their paper will never ask about while missing material it will. Structure differs too — the number of papers, how long each is, how marks are distributed between short and extended answers, and how much of the total sits in one paper. A subject where one paper carries a large share of the marks is a different risk profile from one spread evenly. Mark schemes differ in what they reward. Some are more generous to method; some demand specific terminology. This is the difference that shows up in a mock and is fixable only by practising against the right one.

Revising from the wrong specification is the most avoidable mistake in A-Level study, and the most common one among students who change institution mid-course.

Why this matters most for resitters and private candidates

If you are resitting, you are not obliged to re-enter with the same board. Sometimes there is a good reason to change — a specification that suits the student better, or a board a new centre is approved for. But there is a practical constraint. Carrying forward a science practical endorsement or a coursework mark works across boards, but it requires the correct entry codes and the same unique candidate identifier. That is straightforward when it is planned and awkward when it is discovered late. For private candidates, the binding constraint is usually which boards your centre is approved for. That is a question to ask before you choose a specification, not after.

How to check what you are actually sitting

Every specification has a code, and it is the only reliable identifier. AQA Biology is 7402; OCR Biology A is H420. AQA Chemistry is 7405 and OCR Chemistry A is H432. AQA Physics is 7408 and OCR Physics A is H556. AQA Mathematics is 7357 and OCR Mathematics A is H240. Get the code in writing before you buy a textbook, download past papers or start revising. If a tutor, college or online course cannot tell you which code they teach to, that is a meaningful signal about how closely they follow the specification at all. And check it again at entry. The code on your statement of entry is what you will actually sit.
