Your Grade Looks Wrong: How Reviews of Marking Work
What to do in the days after results if a grade does not match the work, and why the window for doing it is shorter than most people realise.
Read MoreWhichever way you study, you sit the same papers, from the same specification, marked to the same standards, and the certificate records none of it. Nothing on an A-Level certificate says where the teaching happened. So the choice is not about the qualification. It is about which arrangement will actually get you through the year, and that is a question about you rather than about the mode. Be wary of anyone who tells you one mode is inherently better. They all work for some students and fail for others, and the failure modes are different.
**In person** gives you a fixed time, a room, a teacher and a group. The structure is external — you turn up because the session is happening. It costs the most in travel and in inflexibility, and it suits students who know that left alone they will not do the work. **Online**, when it means live taught sessions rather than a library of recordings, keeps the timetable and the teacher but removes the room. It removes the commute, which for some students is the difference between attending and not. What it asks in return is the discipline to be present properly rather than half-present. **Hybrid** is a fixed split between the two, agreed before you start rather than chosen week by week. That distinction matters: a fixed pattern means you know which weeks require you to be in the building, and it puts the sessions that genuinely need a room — practicals, mocks, one-to-one tutorials — on the in-person side. Distance learning, where materials are sent and submitted work is marked with no scheduled contact, is a fourth thing again. It is the cheapest and the most demanding of your own organisation.
Some things cannot be done remotely by anybody. The science practical endorsement and non-exam assessment must be conducted by a centre, in person, whatever mode you study in.
Whatever you choose, part of some subjects has to happen in a room with an assessor. The A-Level science practical endorsement is twelve required practical activities, assessed and reported by a centre. Non-exam assessment — including the Computer Science programming project — has to be conducted and authenticated by a centre under supervision. Neither can be completed remotely, by any provider. That does not rule out online or hybrid study for those subjects. It means the practical component is scheduled separately, in person, and it should be a specific question you ask before enrolling rather than something you discover in the spring. If you already hold a practical endorsement pass from a previous attempt, it carries forward and the question largely disappears.
The test is simple and uncomfortable: think about the last time you had to do sustained work with nobody checking. If it went badly, choose the mode with the most external structure you can manage, even if it is less convenient. Then ask any provider four things. How many hours a week of live teaching, as opposed to material to work through? Is the teaching live or recorded? Who marks your written work, how often, and against what? And for hybrid — which specific sessions are in person, agreed when? At London Maths and Science College all three modes are available across the ten A-Level subjects, both GCSE routes, UCAS support and revision courses. The prices published on the site are for in-person teaching; online and hybrid places are quoted individually, because the split differs from student to student.
