The date everything hangs on

For the Summer 2027 series, the standard exam entry deadline falls on 21 February 2027. That is the date by which a centre has to have submitted your entry to the awarding body. It sits roughly three months before the papers, which surprises people. A student deciding in March that they would like to sit in June has, in most cases, already missed the ordinary route. It is also the date that governs carrying forward a science practical endorsement or a coursework mark. Those requests are made with the entry, using the same unique candidate identifier as the original award. Made on time, it is administrative. Discovered afterwards, it is a problem.

What happens if you miss it

Late entries are accepted for a period after the deadline, at an increased fee set by the awarding body. That fee rises again as the exams get closer, in stages. Eventually entries close altogether, and at that point the next opportunity is the following summer. The exact dates and the size of each increase are set by each awarding body and change from year to year, so they should be confirmed with your centre rather than taken from any website — including this one. What does not change is the shape: on time, then more expensive, then considerably more expensive, then closed. A centre that passes these on at cost will show you the figure before you commit. Ask for it in writing.

The dates around it

**Access arrangements** run on their own, earlier timetable. Evidence, assessment and the application to the awarding body all take time, and the deadline for applying sits well before the exams. If you need extra time or any other arrangement, start in the autumn, not in the spring. **Science practicals** are scheduled across the year rather than in a block, because twelve required activities cannot be compressed sensibly into a fortnight. If you need a new endorsement, that shapes your whole year. **Mocks** are not a national date, but a well-run course puts a full mock series in January. That is what produces the evidence behind a predicted grade, and on a one-year course it is also the last useful early warning. **UCAS** has its own calendar entirely. Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Medicine close in mid-October; the main deadline for most other courses is in January.

Results day, and the window after it

A-Level results for the Summer 2027 series are published on Thursday 12 August 2027. The days immediately after are busier than people expect. Universities decide quickly on near-miss applicants. Clearing runs from results day. And if a grade looks wrong, reviews of marking and access to scripts have their own deadlines set by the awarding bodies — measured in weeks after results, not months. That is the argument for doing nothing on the first evening and something specific on each of the next three days. Nothing that matters is decided in the first few hours, but several things that matter are decided in the first fortnight.
