What Does It Actually Cost to Resit an A-Level?

There are two invoices, not one

Almost every provider prices its own product and leaves the rest to you. Tuition here, exam entry somewhere else, practicals unmentioned, late fees discovered in March. The two invoices are teaching and entry, and they are genuinely separate services. You can buy either without the other: a private candidate who has studied alone needs only the entry, and a student whose school is entering them needs only the teaching. Bundling them would mean one group subsidising the other. What is not acceptable is failing to tell you both numbers before you commit. Adding unavoidable charges late in a purchase is prohibited under the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024, and it is a poor way to treat people regardless.

The charges people forget

**Exam entry**, per subject, per series. At London Maths and Science College a written A-Level entry is three hundred and seventy-five pounds, or three hundred and ninety-five for Mathematics and Further Mathematics, which involve more papers. **The practical endorsement**, if you need a new one. A science entry including the twelve required practicals is nine hundred and ninety-five pounds; the endorsement on its own, where the papers are entered elsewhere, is six hundred and fifty. **Access arrangements administration** — one hundred and twenty-five pounds, charged once per candidate per series however many subjects you take. **Late entry**, at whatever the awarding body charges, which rises in stages. **Reviews of marking and access to scripts** after results, which carry awarding body fees. And the ordinary ones: textbooks, travel, and any optional tuition or revision you choose to add.

If you already hold a practical endorsement pass, you should be paying the paper rate, not the science rate. Across two sciences that single fact is worth roughly two and a half thousand pounds.

A worked example

A student resitting Biology and Chemistry who already holds a practical endorsement pass, studying part-time in person and paying monthly. Tuition for two subjects at the standard rate is five hundred and sixty-nine pounds a month across ten months — five thousand six hundred and ninety. Two written entries at three hundred and seventy-five pounds is seven hundred and fifty. Total for the year: six thousand four hundred and forty pounds, with no deposit and no registration fee. The same student without an existing endorsement needs the practicals delivered. Tuition at the two-science rate is six thousand nine hundred and fifty; two science entries including the endorsement are nine hundred and ninety-five each. Total: eight thousand nine hundred and forty. The difference is two and a half thousand pounds, and it turns entirely on one question nobody asks at enrolment.

Four questions that expose a hidden fee

Ask what the exam entry fee is, per subject, and whether it is included. If the answer is vague, it is not included. Ask whether the practical endorsement is included for sciences, and what happens if you already hold a pass. A provider that cannot answer this quickly has not thought about resitters. Ask what happens to your money if you withdraw, and specifically what happens to an entry already lodged with an awarding body. An entry made cannot be unmade for free, and you should see that calculation rather than have it absorbed silently. Ask whether the published price is held for the whole course. Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 the information a provider gives you about a service becomes a term of the contract — so get the answer in writing, and keep it.
