NEA and Coursework As a Private Candidate

Non-exam assessment is the part of an A-Level that does not happen in an exam room, and it is the part a private candidate cannot arrange alone. Somebody has to supervise it, authenticate it and submit it, and that somebody must be an approved centre.

At a glance

  • NEA must be centre-supervised
  • Centres must provide the opportunity
  • Marks can often be carried forward
  • Confirm arrangements in writing

Non-exam assessment, coursework, projects, investigations and the science practical endorsement, must be supervised, authenticated and submitted to the awarding body by an approved centre, which means a private candidate cannot complete it independently and must find a centre that will take it on before choosing the subject.

What Non-Exam Assessment Is

Non-exam assessment, usually shortened to NEA, is any assessed component that is not a written paper sat under exam conditions on a published date. It covers coursework folders, extended investigations, programming projects, fieldwork, performances and spoken assessments, and, in the sciences, the practical endorsement.

The common feature is that the work is produced over time rather than in a fixed session, which is precisely why it needs supervision. The awarding body has to be satisfied that the work is yours, produced under the conditions the specification requires, and marked to the published criteria.

That satisfaction comes from a centre. A centre supervises the work, applies the mark scheme, authenticates the work as the candidate's own, submits marks by a deadline, and retains the work for moderation. None of those five things can be done by the candidate.

How This Affects the Subjects We Teach

Mathematics, Further Mathematics, StatisticsNoneNothing beyond an exam entry.
Psychology, Economics, BusinessNoneNothing beyond an exam entry.
Biology, Chemistry, PhysicsPractical endorsement, twelve required practicalsA centre with a laboratory able to assess against CPAC, unless a previous Pass is carried forward.
Computer ScienceProgramming project (NEA)A centre that will supervise, authenticate, mark and submit the project. Both AQA 7517 and OCR H446 carry it.

The service side of this, what we deliver, when and at what cost, is on the NEA and coursework page. This page is the explanation.

Step by step

What the Centre Actually Does

  1. Sets or Approves the Task

Depending on the specification, the task is either set by the awarding body or set locally within published constraints. A private candidate cannot select their own task without the centre agreeing it against the specification.

  2. Supervises the Work

The specification prescribes the level of supervision, how much can be done independently, what help may be given, what must be observed. The centre is responsible for meeting that standard, not the candidate.

  3. Marks Against the Published Criteria

The centre applies the awarding body mark scheme. This is centre assessment, so the mark is proposed by the centre and subject to moderation by the awarding body.

  4. Authenticates the Work

A formal declaration that the work is the candidate's own. Both centre and candidate sign. This is the step private candidates are most often surprised by, and the reason unsupervised work cannot be accepted.

  5. Submits Marks by the Deadline

NEA marks are submitted to the awarding body on a published deadline that falls well before the written papers. Missing it is not recoverable within the series.

  6. Retains the Work for Moderation

The awarding body may request samples. The centre holds the work, which is another reason it must be produced through the centre in the first place.

Carrying a Mark Forward Instead of Repeating the Work

If you are resitting a subject in which you have already completed the non-exam assessment, you may not need to do it again. AQA operates a formal carry-forward of marks process, and publishes guidance on how a centre requests it.

Two things are worth being precise about. First, carry-forward is a request made by the centre at the point of entry, using specific entry codes, it does not happen automatically on a standard entry. Second, the period for which a mark may be carried forward is set by the awarding body and the specification, so confirm it rather than assuming it is indefinite.

The science practical endorsement is the strongest case: a Pass carries forward for the lifetime of the specification, with no time restriction, and across a different awarding body. That is set out in full on the carry-forward guide.

Carry-forward is also optional. If your NEA mark was the weak part of the grade, you can choose to produce new work instead, provided a centre will supervise it, and provided you allow the months it takes.

The Computer Science Project, Specifically

A-Level Computer Science carries a substantial programming project. Both available domestic specifications, AQA 7517 and OCR H446, include it, and there is no version of the qualification without it. Pearson does not offer a domestic A-Level Computer Science, so there is no third option.

The project runs across months, not weeks. It needs a defined problem, an analysis, a design, working code, testing evidence and an evaluation, and the centre must be able to observe enough of it to authenticate the work honestly.

We deliver the project as part of the taught course, at £340 a month, £1,080 termly or £3,060 paid in full. That figure is for teaching. Exam entry is charged separately.

If you are being offered a Computer Science entry by a centre that has not explained how the project will be supervised, ask before you pay.

Questions

Questions About NEA and Coursework

Any assessed component of a qualification that is not a written paper sat under exam conditions on a published date, coursework, projects, investigations, performances, spoken assessments and the science practical endorsement.

It is produced over time and assessed by the centre, then moderated by the awarding body.

Because the centre has to certify the conditions under which it was produced, apply the mark scheme, authenticate it as your own work and retain it for moderation. None of that is possible for work produced entirely outside its supervision.

This is not a matter of centre preference. It is how the assessment is designed to be valid.

Yes, provided a centre will conduct the component. AQA states that schools and colleges must provide the opportunity for all candidates, including private candidates, to complete NEAs and the practical skills endorsement.

The difficulty is practical rather than regulatory: not every centre is set up to supervise NEA for candidates it does not teach. Ask before enrolling anywhere.

Often, yes. AQA operates a carry-forward of marks process and publishes guidance on how the request is made by the centre.

The request is made at the point of entry with specific entry codes. It does not happen automatically, and it is matched on your Unique Candidate Identifier.

That depends on the awarding body and the specification, so confirm it rather than assuming. Do not treat a coursework mark as having the same indefinite life as a practical endorsement Pass.

The science practical endorsement is the clear case: a Pass carries for the lifetime of the specification with no time restriction, and across awarding bodies.

NEA is the umbrella term. Coursework is the traditional name for a folder or project that carries marks contributing to the grade. The practical endorsement is a special case: it is centre-assessed like NEA, but it carries no marks and is reported separately as Pass or Not Classified.

That difference has a consequence. A weak coursework mark drags your grade down; a Not Classified does not touch the grade, but is visible on your certificate.

Both you and the centre. Authentication is a formal declaration, and the centre cannot make it honestly about work it has not supervised.

This is why "I have already written the project, can you just submit it" is not a request a centre can agree to.

You can produce new non-exam assessment work rather than carrying the old mark forward, carry-forward is an option, not an obligation.

But because A-Levels are linear, the written papers are re-sat too. You cannot keep the paper marks and replace only the NEA.

On a deadline published by the awarding body that falls well before the written papers, usually in the spring of the exam year. Marks are submitted by the centre, not by the candidate.

Work backwards from that deadline when planning. An NEA started in February for a summer series is generally too late to be done properly.

A substantial programming project: a defined problem, analysis, design, working code, testing evidence and an evaluation, produced across months under centre supervision.

It appears on both AQA 7517 and OCR H446. There is no domestic A-Level Computer Science without it, and Pearson does not offer one.

On our taught courses the project is delivered as part of the programme, taught, supervised, marked and submitted, at £340 a month for Computer Science, or £3,060 paid in full.

Supervision alone, without teaching, is a different arrangement and should be priced and described as such by any centre offering it.

Then that centre cannot give you the qualification, and for science A-Levels it should not be entering you at all: OCR states that a centre without provision for the practical endorsement cannot enter the candidate.

Treat it as a signal to look elsewhere rather than as a problem to solve yourself.
