Which A-Level Subjects Can a Private Candidate Realistically Take?

Any subject a centre is willing and able to enter you for. In practice that means every A-Level assessed entirely by written paper is straightforward, and subjects with a practical or non-exam component depend on finding a centre that will conduct and submit that component.

Of the ten subjects we teach, six are written papers only: Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Statistics, Psychology, Economics and Business.

Those with no non-exam assessment at all. Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Statistics, Economics, Business and Psychology are all assessed entirely by written paper, so a private candidate is assessed identically to a school candidate.

Easiest to arrange is not the same as easiest to pass. Mathematics is the largest A-Level in England by entry and is not an easy paper.

Yes, through a centre that makes provision for the practical endorsement. The written papers are entered as normal, and the twelve required practicals are assessed by the centre against CPAC.

If you already hold a Pass in the Biology endorsement from a previous attempt, it carries forward and you are entered for written papers only.

Yes. The endorsement is completed with the centre, in its laboratory, across the teaching year. It is not something you evidence from home.

What you cannot do is complete the endorsement independently and present it. It is centre-assessed and centre-declared, which is precisely why the centre must make provision.

Yes, on the same basis as Biology and Chemistry. AQA 7408 and OCR Physics A (H556) both carry the practical endorsement.

Note that OCR Physics B (H557) has its final assessment in June 2028, so it is not the specification to start now.

Yes, but only through a centre that will supervise, authenticate and submit the programming project. The NEA is a substantial piece of work and it carries a meaningful share of the marks.

Both available domestic specifications, AQA 7517 and OCR H446, carry the project. There is no version without it, and Pearson does not offer a domestic A-Level Computer Science.

Yes, and it is one of the more straightforward choices. AQA 7182 and OCR H567 are both assessed entirely by written paper.

Be aware that research methods and statistics carry a substantial share of the marks. Students who choose Psychology to avoid mathematics are usually surprised.

Yes. Mathematics has no coursework and no practical component on either AQA 7357 or OCR H240, three written papers and nothing else.

Because it has more papers than most subjects, entry is charged slightly higher at our centre than for other written-paper subjects. The exam fees page lists both rates.

It is realistic, but it is a second subject rather than an extension of the first. Further Mathematics is taken alongside Mathematics, not instead of it, so plan for two subjects' worth of teaching time.

There is no non-exam assessment, so nothing about the assessment itself is harder for a private candidate.

Yes, and with Edexcel only. Pearson Edexcel 9ST0 is the only A-Level Statistics currently available in England; there is no AQA or OCR equivalent.

That makes the centre question sharper than usual: a centre that cannot enter Pearson cannot enter you for this subject at all.

Yes. AQA 7136 Economics and AQA 7132 Business are both written papers only.

Business includes quantitative analysis of real company data within the written papers, but there is no coursework folder to submit.

Any subject where a large share of the marks comes from work that must be produced under centre supervision over months, extended coursework, portfolios, performances, fieldwork or spoken assessments, unless you have already confirmed in writing that a centre will assess and submit it.

The subject is not the problem; the arrangement is. Confirm the arrangement first and the subject becomes viable.

Read the assessment section of the specification for the exact subject and board. Every component is listed with its weighting and its type. Non-exam assessment is always labelled as such.

Do not rely on a summary elsewhere. Specifications change, and boards differ on the same subject.

Only from among the boards your centre is approved to enter. Approval is held by centre and by awarding body, so the choice is made jointly with whoever is entering you.

Ask which boards a centre can enter before you commit to a specification, not after.

It is not a sensible plan, and it creates problems at results and at certification. Universities receive a certificate showing the qualifications you hold, and duplicate awards in the same subject invite questions rather than answers.

If the aim is a safety net, the better route is one entry made properly and early.

There is no regulatory cap. The practical limits are timetable clashes in the published exam timetable, the total teaching hours you can sustain, and cost.

Part-time study here is three hours per subject per week across thirty weeks, so four subjects is twelve hours of teaching a week before any independent study.

Yes. Nothing requires prior study of the subject, and no rule requires you to have taken it at GCSE. Whether one year is enough depends on the subject and on how much time you can give it.

The accelerated one-year route exists for exactly this case: two subjects at £820 a month, three at £1,080, four at £1,300.

No awarding body rule requires GCSEs for entry to an A-Level. Entry requirements are set by whoever teaches you, not by the qualification.

In practice, Mathematics and the sciences assume GCSE-level algebra and numeracy, and starting without it makes the year much harder than it needs to be.

AS remains available in a number of subjects and is assessed separately from the A-Level, AS marks do not contribute to an A-Level grade.

AS carries no formal practical endorsement in the sciences, though AS papers assume six required practical activities and examine that content on paper. Note that OCR AS Psychology (H167) has its final assessment in June 2027.

Not as a candidate studying in the UK. Pearson states that its International A Levels are not available for candidates studying in the UK.

Cambridge International A-Levels are a different matter, but they carry no UCAS Tariff points after Ofqual recognition was surrendered on 20 December 2024, harmless for grade-based offers, and a real problem in Clearing.
