Resitting A-Levels for Medicine in London

Yes. Nothing in the A-Level system prevents it, and there is no limit on the number of attempts at an A-Level.

What varies is each medical school's policy on resits, and those policies are stricter here than in most of the sector. Establish the position for each school before you commit the year, not afterwards.

A UCAT score is valid for one admissions cycle only, and the UCAS deadline for Medicine is 15 October. So the test has to be sat in the summer immediately before the application.

A student starting a resit course in September has, in most cases, already missed the booking window for the following year's entry. That is the trap: the course start and the test window do not overlap, and nobody points it out until it is too late.

Abstract Reasoning was removed from the test in 2025.

Preparation materials published before then still contain an Abstract Reasoning section. Practising it is wasted time; check the publication date of anything you use.

In most cases, the cycle after next, sit the A-Levels in Summer 2027, take the UCAT in the summer of 2027, and apply by 15 October 2027 with the grade already achieved.

Applying in the current cycle is possible but means applying with pending grades and a UCAT you may not have had time to prepare for. The extra year usually produces a materially stronger application.

That the qualifications forming the offer were awarded in the same exam series. A resit taken a year after the original attempt is by definition not one sitting.

Some schools use "first attempt" instead, and some use "within two years", which is a different and often more accommodating test. Read the exact wording for the year of entry you are applying for.

What is certain is that the endorsement is reported separately from the grade, appears on the certificate as Pass or Not Classified, and that a Pass carries forward to a resit rather than needing to be repeated.

It is, provided the UCAT preparation starts in the spring rather than the summer, and provided the target is the following cycle rather than the current one.

What is not realistic is starting an accelerated A-Level programme in September and sitting a well-prepared UCAT four weeks later.

Ask the schools directly. Some will consider an application with pending resit grades; others will not, and where a course applies a first-attempt rule the pending grade does not help.

Waiting is not a wasted year if it converts pending grades into achieved ones and gives the UCAT a proper run-up.

The one-year accelerated route is £13,000 paid in full, £4,600 termly or £1,450 a month across ten months. The two-year route is £9,700 a year paid in full, or £1,080 a month. UCAT coaching alone is £1,250 in full or three payments of £450.

Exam entry is charged separately: £995 for a science with the practical endorsement, £375 where the endorsement carries forward, £395 for Mathematics. A hardship rate of £1,300 a month is available on the one-year route on request.
